High School Flex Credit
for classes at the German Language School
It is possible to receive High School credit for taking classes at the German Language School.
Here is what you need to know:
- Every school district has an independent Board. While state law allows districts, schools, community schools and chartered nonpublic schools to offer Flex Credit, not every school district’s policy has created a path to Flex Credit. Visit the ODE site for more details.
- Start the process early. In many schools the credits for the next school year have to be complete the previous spring.
For example in the case of Westlake, application for flex credit for the next school year is due by May 1st.
The important part is to have your form submitted before the due date. Many guidance counselors work with you to get the form fully completed after the due date if you are missing information and signatures.
In many school districts you can get high school credit while in middle school. You could potentially apply in the spring before the start of 7th grade and get High School Credit.
- You will need to submit a copy of the report card from the German Language School to get credit.
- The school will likely proctor a test, and there will be a fee for this test that you will pay directly to the school. If this is the case, notify the German Language School so we do not order a test as well.
- Check what the language requirement is for graduation. In many cases it is recommended that there are 2 years of 2 languages (4 classes total) or 3 years of 1 language.
For the bi-literacy seal, the AP German test must be taken the Junior or Senior year. If you take it is as a freshman or sophomore, you can get high school credit, but may need to retake the test before graduation, to earn the bi-literacy seal. The Avant STAMP 4S and the AAPPL tests are also available through most schools, to test for the bi-literacy seal.
The German Language School is a great foundation for college level courses. Your student may be able to enroll in post-secondary enrollment and take college level German Classes while in high school. Our AP test preparation class is a great foundation towards this.
We recommend our Exam Prep class be taken 2-3 years in a row, to provide the best chance at a high AP score. One year is NOT enough. This class begins at the B1 level (after 4 years of typical high school German instruction).
We also offer “adult” class levels A1.1 A1.2, A2.1, A2.2, and most years B1. High school students may also take these classes for Flex Credit or bi-literacy test preparation, even if they are not interested in the AP Exam.
